You have tapped into something fundamental here. Firstly, will the models ideate threats we humans otherwise may not have, and what are the implications of that. So it’s not strictly a real world simulation because the system simulating it is now a lone participant in the process and « playing » against itself. And that begs the question of, should the exercise ever take place at all. Thirdly, as you pointed out, this exponentially speeds up the « race » that granted, we started, and that for a variety of reasons will compound the overall effects. Just because we can, does not mean we should. Here, we may just end up in the same place at the end of it all, having only discovered new and ungoverned threats along the way. And worse, what if one of those threats in the simulation cannot be replicated by humans alone? You’ve just given ai another tool we don’t have, certainly so if the model can’t or worse won’t divulge the mechanism of that threat. Moral of the story: just because we can does not mean we should. But in the ungoverned world of the platforms that exist, we (society as whole) may have already gone past the threshold of should we, and it’s no longer in our hands. Worrying. Bad human actors may have started all this but in doing this, we may have just created the baddest actor of all. All well and fine if we are talking about a game of chess (new novel moves and ways of winning the game etc), but this is not a game. Buyer Beware.
The fact that platforms are being given the corpus of human expression, the corpus of human thought and ideation compiled through the use of the platform, the market insights gained and the overall competitive advantage derived from that is where « this » all starts. Slow down is right. What’s the hurry anyways ? Oh…right…. Forgot…. Money and Power, of course. Sigh.
