Knowing When Not to Use AI
For the past two years, the question has been simple.
How can AI help me do this faster?
That question made sense when AI first arrived. It was new. Powerful.
Obviously useful. If something could be automated or generated instantly, why wouldn’t you use it?
But something is changing.
People who use AI the most are starting to hesitate.
Not because it is weak.
Because it is strong enough to interfere with things that matter.
Speed is not always the goal.
Efficiency is not always improvement.
And optimization is not the same as understanding.
We are entering a phase where the real advantage is no longer knowing how to use AI.
The real advantage is knowing when to step away from it.
Restraint is becoming a skill.
The First Phase Was Expansion
When a powerful technology appears, the first instinct is expansion. Use it everywhere. Test every boundary. Replace anything slow.
That is what happened with AI.
People used it to write, plan, code, summarize, research, brainstorm, decide, respond, and generate. Entire workflows were rebuilt around its speed. Entire professions reorganized around its capabilities.
This phase is normal. Every general purpose technology follows the same path. Electricity spread everywhere once it became reliable. The internet integrated into every industry once connectivity stabilized.
Economists call these technologies general purpose technologies because they transform entire systems rather than isolated tasks (Brynjolfsson and McAfee 2014).
But general purpose technologies eventually create a second phase.
Differentiation.
Not everyone uses them the same way. The advantage shifts from access to judgment.
The Problem With Using AI for Everything
AI is extremely good at producing outputs. It is less reliable at preserving processes.
That distinction matters more than most people realize.
Many human activities are valuable not because of the result, but because of what happens during the effort. Thinking through a problem builds mental structure. Writing from scratch clarifies reasoning. Struggling with uncertainty develops judgment.
When AI removes the friction, it often removes the cognitive transformation that friction produces.
Researchers studying cognitive offloading have shown that when people rely heavily on external systems for thinking tasks, they invest less effort in building internal representations of information (Risko and Gilbert 2016).
That is efficient in the short term.
It can be limiting in the long term.
If every hard step is bypassed, depth becomes optional.
And optional abilities tend to atrophy.
High Performers Are Already Adjusting
Something interesting is happening among people who use AI constantly.
They are starting to protect certain activities from automation.
Writers draft key sections manually.
Programmers solve core logic before asking for assistance.
Researchers form hypotheses before querying models.
Executives think through decisions before asking for analysis.
This is not nostalgia. It is strategy.
They are preserving the parts of cognition that produce insight rather than output.
Skill is shifting from execution to calibration. Knowing what to delegate and what to experience directly.
That boundary is becoming a competitive advantage.
The Emergence of Cognitive Positioning
Think about what expertise traditionally meant.
Knowledge. Experience. Pattern recognition built over time.
Now information is cheap. Output is instant. Pattern recognition can be simulated.
So where does human advantage move?
It moves to positioning.
Positioning means deciding where human cognition should remain in the loop. Where interpretation matters more than speed. Where understanding must precede optimization.
This is not anti technology. It is strategic integration.
Airline pilots still train for manual control even though autopilot systems are highly reliable. Medicine still requires hands on training even with diagnostic software. Financial trading still involves discretionary judgment even with algorithmic systems.
Automation does not eliminate human responsibility. It changes where responsibility sits.
AI is forcing that shift across nearly every field.
Overuse Creates a New Kind of Fragility
There is another reason restraint is becoming valuable.
Overreliance reduces adaptability.
If you use AI for every planning step, you lose planning fluency. If you use it for every explanation, you lose explanatory structure. If you use it for every creative decision, you lose aesthetic development.
Psychologists studying automation dependence have long documented that heavy reliance on automated systems can reduce the ability to respond effectively when those systems fail or behave unexpectedly (Parasuraman and Riley 1997).
This is not hypothetical. It is a known pattern across aviation, medicine, and industrial control systems.
Competence fades when engagement disappears.
The more powerful the system, the more careful the boundary must be.
The Social Signal Is Reversing
There is also a cultural shift beginning to emerge.
Early in the AI era, visible use of AI signaled sophistication. It meant you were modern, efficient, optimized.
That signal is starting to split.
Using AI everywhere now signals dependence as much as capability.
Producing something manually, or demonstrating deep understanding independent of tools, is starting to carry new value.
This is how technologies mature socially. The first stage rewards adoption. The second rewards discernment.
We are entering the discernment stage.
This Is Not About Rejecting AI
None of this means AI should be avoided.
It means AI should be positioned.
The most effective users will not be the ones who automate everything. They will be the ones who design cognitive boundaries intentionally.
They will know which tasks benefit from speed and which require immersion. Which decisions require statistical support and which require experiential judgment. Which processes create understanding and which only create output.
This is a higher order skill than usage.
It is architectural thinking applied to cognition itself.
The first generation of AI advantage came from access. The second came from skillful use. The next will come from selective restraint.
Anyone can generate output quickly now. Fewer people can decide when speed is harmful.
The new expertise is not technical. It is behavioral.
Knowing when AI helps.
Knowing when it interferes.
Knowing when thinking must remain fully human.
The question is no longer how often you use AI.
The question is what parts of your mind you refuse to outsource.
That boundary may become the defining skill of the AI era.

This really tracks with what I’m seeing: the advantage is shifting from use to judgment.
The line that lands for me is “AI produces outputs; it doesn’t preserve processes.” In MH / safeguarding / contested narratives, that distinction is everything — because the “process” is where meaning gets tested, corrected, and held with care.
I’ve been calling the missing layer Digital Narrative Care: record integrity, meaning integrity, and aftercare. This piece makes the same architectural point in cognitive terms: position the tool, don’t let it position you.
Restraint is becoming a skill — and I’d add: assurance is a dial, not a switch.

100%. It's taken me some time but over time i've definitely learned when it actually gets in the way. I think a lot of people need to identify those issues for themselves.
