Not because it’s gone.

So there’s no single place to point to.
This Changes How Trust Works
Before, trust was external.
You trusted:

the publication
the author
Now trust shifts inward.
To the output itself.
If it reads clearly…
If it feels consistent…
If it sounds confident…
That becomes the signal.
But confidence isn’t origin.
And clarity isn’t proof.
Research has shown that people are more likely to trust information that is presented fluently and confidently, even when its source is unclear or unreliable (Nature Human Behaviour, 2023).
So the structure of the answer starts to replace the traceability of the information.
You Stop Asking Where It Came From
Not consciously.
But gradually.
Because nothing in the interaction pushes you to.
There’s no friction.
No missing step.
No visible gap.
And that gap used to matter.
Because knowing where something came from…
Helped you understand what it meant.
Its context.
Its limitations.
Its reliability.
Without that, everything starts to flatten.
Different Sources Become One Layer
Multiple perspectives.
Multiple interpretations.
Multiple levels of certainty.
Compressed into a single output.
So difference disappears.
Even when it still exists underneath.

I like what you wrote here. It is in how we use the system we build for ourselves. Personally, I built my retrieval to return reference links with the information ask so I can verify and check. I only needed faster retrieval and aggregation - not something to do the thinking for me.
This is a subtle gap with AI usage. I have been experimenting over the last 3 week with various use cases. I’m fortunate enough to be a quick learner and identify when something is off. There are two sides to this gap: 1. How we develop and deliver prompts to convey context 2. The AI’s understanding of domain best practices and workflows.
This doesn’t mean you won’t achieve your end goals by working with AI it just means you need to be cognizant of gaps and know your prompts might be introducing them.
