OpenAI IPO Warning
Retail Buys The Dream, Insiders Get The Exit
OpenAI began with a very different image.
A research lab.
A safety mission.
A nonprofit structure.
A promise to build advanced AI for broad benefit.
That was the original story.
Then ChatGPT changed everything.
The lab became a product company.
The product became a platform.
The platform became a business.
Now OpenAI has confidentially filed for a U.S. IPO, according to Reuters, with a possible valuation as high as $1 trillion (Reuters, 2026).
That is where the story gets dangerous.
The market may be preparing to value OpenAI like the winner of AI before the business model has proven it deserves that price.
The danger is that by the time retail investors finally get access, early private investors may already be waiting for the lockup clock to expire so they can exit into public-market demand.
