Apple Gets In Bed With Beijing
Tim Cook Trades OpenAI For A Highly Censored Government Romance
Apple Intelligence is finally coming to China.
It will arrive with a different brain.
In the United States and other markets, Apple combines its own models with optional access to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Chinese users will instead receive an intelligence layer built with Alibaba’s Qwen and technology from Baidu.
The iPhone remains the same physical product.
The AI inside it now changes at the border.
China’s cyberspace regulator registered Apple Intelligence for use in the country on July 15, clearing the most important regulatory obstacle to its launch. Alibaba confirmed that Qwen will be integrated across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro in China. Baidu also confirmed that it is developing Apple Intelligence features for Chinese users.
The regulator did not provide a launch date (Reuters, 2026a).
Apple needed access to the Chinese market.
China demanded an AI system built around Chinese models and Chinese rules.
Apple accepted the deal.
