Fable 5 Was Released, Then Pulled Back

Anthropic had just released Claude Fable 5.

The company described it as its strongest public model.

A Mythos-class system made available for general use.

It was supposed to show that Anthropic had found a way to release frontier capability with safeguards.

Then the U.S. government stepped in.

Anthropic said the U.S. government issued an export-control directive suspending all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign-national Anthropic employees (Anthropic, 2026).

Reuters reported that Anthropic disabled its top-tier AI models after a U.S. order limiting foreign access, while Axios described the move as the Trump administration blocking foreign access to Anthropic’s most powerful AI systems (Reuters, 2026a; Axios, 2026a).

According to Anthropic, the order forced the company to abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all customers to ensure compliance, while access to all other Anthropic models remained unaffected (Anthropic, 2026).

That is the real story.

The model was no longer treated like a normal software release.

It was treated like strategic technology.
